Why is the left demanding that the Canadian government apologize to Obama?

Over the last couple of days, my colleagues on the left have gotten into a fit over US Democratic Presidential candidate, Barak Obama being exposed for his inconsistent position on NAFTA. Instead of insisting on Obama to clarify his position, since it will affect trade and jobs with our biggest trading partner, they have gone after the Harper government

"Will he now apologize to this House, the American people, and Senator Obama, and will he fire his chief of staff?" NDP Leader Jack Layton asked during the daily question period.

The one thing that I don't get is that Obama was the one who got caught speaking from both sides of his mouth on the NAFTA issue and was justifiably exposed for doing so. He was caught telling the American people that he would seek to re-negotiate NAFTA, while at the same time an Obama aide told Canadian officials that he wasn't serious.

So I am trying to understand the reasoning of those on the left who want the Prime Minister to apologize to Obama and the American people. Are they saying that a serious inconsistency in the position of the frontrunner of the Democratic Presidential candidates on the NAFTA agreement, which will affect all of us, should not be exposed? On what basis does Canada owe Obama an apology? Maybe Obama and his campaign team should be the ones who need to apologize to the American people for being less than forthright with them, since whatever decision his government makes on NAFTA, if he becomes President, will have as much of an impact on American jobs and companies, as it will on Canada.

Weird how the leftist in Canada is demanding Canada apologize for Obama talking out of both sides of his mouth on NAFTA

I guess it's OK to lie if you are on the left side of the political spectrum.

Can you IMAGINE the outrage if McCain had been saying this.

I think it is funny how the left is soooooo lovey-dovey with American democrats but speaks out of the other side of their mouth when it is republicans.

Jack Layton is Obama's new poodle.

I don't understand the US media's new obsession with Jack Layton. He and his party are as anti-American as you can get.

Wouldn't an apology from the Canadian Prime Minister just prolong this episode which most in the States have already forgotten about?
Wouldn't it make at least the 'lighter side' of American news broadcasts to have the head of a foreign government apologize to Obama over something that falls just short of trivial in terms of newsworthiness?
What if the apology came just before another primary and thrust the double-talking dishonesty back into the limelight ensuring another Clinton win?
Would Layton then demand that Harper resign?
Only in Canada.
This has gone on way too long. Nobody cares except the Toronto Star.

Perhaps Obama should have just kept his mouth shut, or given consideration to the ramifications of what he was saying.

CTV was the culpable party. Make CTV news cheif Robert Hurst apologize and then resign.

I hear David Akin is on a temporary leave. Another ppg relocation reeducation fiasco ala CBC's Erikson?

The parliamentary press gallery is the real problem. Disband and try it again there folks.

Don Martin's latest drunken ramblings tell it all.

The apology could go like this...

Dear Barrick:

We're sorry you're a hypocrite.

Sincerely, The People of Canada

You crass, self-serving Tories.

You apologize because the Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister attempted to interfere in our allies Presidential Race.

You don't do that.

You apologize when you are caught. You don't deny and pretend it didn't happen.

Grow up!!

Anonymous - 12:28 AM,
There is a difference between "exposing the truth" about a contender in the US Presidential race and "Interfering in the US Presidential race".

If a US Presidential contender is speaking from both sides of his mouth on NAFTA, an important issue that affects Canada and Americans, I and many others want to know about it. Matters like these that could affect "all of us" should never be secretly swept under the carpet.

So Anony - you condone lying and covering up lies....?

You DEFINITELY are a liberal.

If we were to apologize to Obama, we would be saying to him and to the American people - it is OK to lie and we are sorry that we exposed the lie.

Sorry Anony - that is NOT the kind of government I want.

Had the Conservative government issued a press release regarding their awareness of Obamas double talk, there might be the smallest bit of room for some criticism.

Fact is that Ian Brodie made a remark in casual conversation. Without the media amplifying this, that comment stays just that.

That David Akin and the media decided to try to make a story out of is a reflection on them, not the government.
