Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto assassinated

Former Pakistani Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto was assassinated today after attending a rally in the city of Rawalpindi. This could not have happened at a worst time, as it is bound to have a destabilizing effect on that country. Especially since it has played a key role in the Afghan war against the Taliban. What will be interesting to see is the effect that this development will have on the Afghan mission.

This is bound to have a negative effect on the "war against terror"

Benazir Bhutto could have had a comfortable life in the West, but instead she chose to return to her homeland and fight for democracy. In her last interview, she indicated that she was aware of the threats to her life in Pakistan, but she had young children and by fighting for democracy, she was securing a future for them in their homeland. It is a very heartbreaking story.

I am thankful that in Canada, we live in a stable democracy where we can all have our political disagreements, but still live together in peace. Some of my best friends have political views aligned with the other federal political parties, but we are able to put it aside since it has no bearing on our relationships.

It is truly sad to see a country descend into such chaos to the point where having a different political viewpoint is enough to get you and your family killed. It just goes to show that extremism that embraces violence, whether religious or political should have no place in any country and should be soundly condemned and stamped out at any opportunity. My hope is that Pakistan and other countries in turmoil will one day find peace and stability, where its citizens with differing religious and political views can live together.

I agree. It is another example why one should never try to negotiate with extremist and terrorist groups like Al-Quaeda or the Taliban.
